It's been an injury-riddled season for the San Francisco 49ers, yet Kyle Shanahan's squad has gotten itself one win away from the NFC Championship Game. The heartbeat of San Francisco's defense could potentially be back for the ride after an extended absence.
Fred Warner returned to practice in a limited capacity this week after fracturing and dislocating his ankle on Oct. 12. The four-time All-Pro linebacker logged limited sessions Tuesday and Wednesday, sparking optimism about him potentially returning to the lineup against the rival Seattle Seahawks.
It's not quite time for Warner yet, however, as he missed practice Thursday while the 49ers ruled him out for Saturday's Divisional Round game. Shanahan is confident next week will be a different story, should the 49ers advance.
"Yes, I do feel confident in that," Shanahan said of Warner's return before the NFC Championship Game. "We'll see if it works out."
To get Warner back, the 49ers must power past the Seahawks, who beat them 13-3 in a Week 18 game that determined the NFC West champion and the NFC's No. 1 seed. It'll be a daunting challenge, especially with two-time All-Pro tight end George Kittle out for the season with a torn Achilles.
If it happens, though, Warner would provide a huge spark the rest of the playoffs. He makes plays all over the field, leading San Francisco in tackles the last seven seasons while missing only one career game prior to his October ankle injury. What a story his return would be.
