Soccer fans in Philadelphia will get one more glimpse of World Cup favorite France when Kylian Mbappe and company take on Paraguay in a Round-of-16 Independence Day showdown.
The last of six FIFA World Cup games at Lincoln Financial Field – renamed Philadelphia Stadium for the tournament – kicks off at 5 p.m.
It is not the matchup most pundits would have predicted. In its first knockout game on June 29 at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, Paraguay defeated Germany in a penalty-kick shootout after the teams tied 1-1 through 90 minutes of regulation and 30 more of overtime.
The stunner erased the highly anticipated matchup between France and Germany, at least one of which have appeared in six of the last seven World Cup finals.
Paraguay opened the World Cup with a 4-1 loss to the United States but nipped Turkiye 1-0 and tied Australia 0-0 to advance.
France downed Sweden in their first knockout-round game June 30 at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey 3-0, demonstrating exquisite passing and finishing skill. They have scored at least three goals in each of their four World Cup games.
The French also defeated Norway 4-1, Iraq 3-0 in Philadelphia and Senegal 3-1.
Saturday's matchup sends the winner into a July 9 quarterfinal against the Morocco at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. Morocco defeated Canada 3-0 on July 4.
Mbappe scored twice against Sweden to raise his World Cup goal total to 18. He has scored two fewer goals than Argentina's Lional Messi, who is 11 1/2 years older.
Mbappe has six in this World Cup, one fewer than Messi.
Tony Award winner Idina Menzel, known for her roles in the original Broadway production of "Wicked" and as a voice actor in Disney's "Frozen," will perform the U.S. national anthem. The Philadelphia Boys Choir and Chorale will perform "America the Beautiful."
There will also be performances by The Roots and Delaware resident DJ Jazzy Jeff.
