France national team manager Didier Deschamps will not be with his squad for Friday’s World Cup match against Norway at Gillette Stadium.
The Athletic reported Tuesday that Deschamps lost his mother earlier in the day and received permission to leave the team’s camp in Waltham to return to France.
The Federation Francaise de Football announced that Guy Stephan will lead the team in Deschamps’ absence.
The contest against Norway is perhaps the highest profile of the entire group stage. Not only will it be a matchup between two of the sport’s best players in Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland, but it will also help determine who wins Group I.
Deschamps has led the national team for the past 14 years and has won 118 matches, including the 2018 World Cup final.
France has won both of its matches this tournament, 3-1 and 3-0.
