Detroit Tigers left-hander Framber Valdez has returned to the club after a brief stint on the bereavement list, and the reason for his absence is a deeply personal one.

According to Tigers beat writer Evan Woodbery, Valdez traveled to the Dominican Republic last week following the death of his grandmother, Aurelina Pinales, who passed away at the age of 83.

A Profound Loss for the Tigers’ Left Hander

Woodbery reported that Pinales played an enormous role in Valdez’s life, helping raise him while serving as one of his biggest supporters throughout his baseball journey.

She was also a devoted baseball fan who followed her grandson’s career every step of the way.

The loss comes during Valdez’s first season with the Tigers, adding another emotional chapter to what has already been a challenging year on and off the field.

Back on the Mound for Detroit

Despite the heartbreaking circumstances, Valdez has returned to the Tigers and is scheduled to start Tuesday.

Before leaving the team, the veteran left-hander was coming off one of his best outings of the season. In his most recent start on July 9 against the Athletics, Valdez allowed just one run over seven innings while striking out nine, reminding everyone why Detroit acquired him to anchor its rotation.

For the season, Valdez owns a 5-6 record with a 4.10 ERA, striking out 87 batters in 107.2 innings across 19 starts.

Tigers Rally Around Their Veteran

Baseball often takes a backseat when life delivers moments like these.

As Valdez returns to the mound on Tuesday night against the Chicago Cubs, the focus extends far beyond wins and losses. The Tigers will undoubtedly be playing for one of their own as their veteran left-hander takes the ball following the loss of someone who helped shape both his life and his baseball career.

Detroit Sports Nation extends its heartfelt condolences to Framber Valdez and his entire family during this difficult time.
