CUMBERLAND — Fort Hill led 9-1 after the second inning and held off a Clear Spring rally to win 10-9 on Monday at Washington Middle.
The Sentinels (1-1) scored four runs in the first and five in the second. Clear Spring scored eight of the game's final nine runs — pulling within one with two outs in the seventh — but Fort Hill shortstop Tatum Bishop (Frostburg State commit) recorded the final out on a fielder's choice to second base.
Haley Metz tossed a complete game in the circle and went 4 for 4 with a double, two runs batted in and two runs scored at the plate.
Metz allowed nine runs (three earned) on nine hits in seven frames with 10 strikeouts to seven walks.
Clear Spring was led by Julia Hayes, who went 4 for 4 with a double and four RBIs.
Fort Hill is at Somerset on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. and hosts No. 5 Southern on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
University 11, No. 1 Allegany 4
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Top-ranked Allegany started fast, but University used a six-run third inning to down the Campers on Monday.
It was a 4-4 game before University's explosion in the bottom of the third, which was aided by a costly two-out error on a Maddie Campbell ground ball when the Campers' deficit was still 5-4.
University pushed five more runs across and chased Allegany ace Jordyn Sneathen (St. Francis) in the process, though just one of the right-hander's 10 runs were earned.
Savannah Walton tossed 3 1/3 strong frames in relief of Sneathen, allowing one run on four hits with five strikeouts, but Campbell spun four shutout frames to bring University over the finish line.
Sadee Baker and Desi Hilton had three hits each for Allegany (1-1). Baker doubled twice and drove in two runs, and Hilton added a two-bagger of her own.
University's Taylor Casino had three hits, one of which was a triple, and Maddie Shaver and Sophia Lehosit doubled.
Campbell earned a complete-game victory in the circle. The right-hander gave up four runs (two earned) on nine hits with eight strikeouts and no walks in seven frames.
Allegany is at Meyersdale on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. in a game rescheduled from April 27.
