After missing several days of training camp due to a knee injury, former Washington Huskies star wide receiver Jalen McMillan returned to the field on Tuesday ahead of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' first preseason game against the New York Jets.
While the former third-round pick in the 2024 draft was unlikely to play in the game either way, especially considering that he suffered multiple fractured vertebrae in a 2025 preseason game, his quick return to action is a great sign for coach Todd Bowles' team.
McMillan is also listed as a starter on Tampa Bay's first depth chart of the season alongside All-Pro Chris Godwin and 2025 first-round pick Emeka Egbuka, and he could see a major uptick in targets if he can return to full participation soon.
Tampa Bay's wide receiver depth was also dealt another blow during a joint practice with the Jets on Wednesday when Egbuka suffered an injury. The Steilacoom, Washington, native reportedly got rolled up on and had to be helped off the field by athletic trainers, which could open up a major role for McMillan, especially as Godwin has had injury issues of his own over the last several years.
Over his first two years, McMillan has pulled in 49 catches for 638 yards and 8 touchdowns, which included a stretch of seven scores in five games at the end of his rookie season, as he showed off impressive chemistry with quarterback Baker Mayfield.
If McMillan can stay healthy, he should have a leg up on Tez Johnson and rookie Ted Hurst for a significant role in Tampa Bay's offense.
