On Tuesday, former USC wide receiver Bru McCoy announced that he is medically retiring from football. McCoy started his college career with the Trojans, before spending the past three seasons at Tennessee.

McCoy's college journey was a wild one, to say the least. He originally signed with USC as a five-star recruit in the class of 2019. Not long after arriving on campus as an early enrollee, however, McCoy decided to transfer to Texas. McCoy went through spring practice in Austin, before transferring again—back to USC.

Due to health issues, McCoy redshirted his first season at USC. As a redshirt freshman in 2020, he caught 21 passes for 236 yards and two touchdowns during the abbreviated COVID season.

Following the departures of starting wide receivers Tyler Vaughns and Amon-Ra St. Brown, McCoy appeared poised to play a bigger role in 2021. Prior to the season, however, McCoy was arrested on domestic violence charges and suspended from the team. While all charges against him were later dropped, McCoy was not reinstated by the Trojans, and instead elected to transfer to Tennessee.

With the Volunteers, McCoy was a productive receiver over the past three years. His best college season came in 2022, when he caught 52 passes for 667 yards and four touchdowns. Due to his injury history, however, McCoy was not selected in last month's NFL Draft. After consultation with doctors, he made the decision to hang up his cleats and move onto the next phase of his life.

From a USC perspective, McCoy's story is one where fans cannot help but wonder what could have been. Had it not been for his arrest, perhaps he would have stayed at USC, and his college career would have played out very differently.
