Safety suddenly feels like a strength for the Cincinnati Bengals.

It’s not just the big-money signing with Bryan Cook, who will start next to Jordan Battle. Heck, it’s not even the really encouraging notes about Kyle Dugger recently.

Depth is a major factor for that spot on the depth chart now, in part, thanks to PJ Jules.

Jules went undrafted in 2024, worked his way up from the practice squad to a training camp headliner last year, then appeared in 14 games during the regular season, earning a contract extension.

Now? It sounds like Jules continues to climb.

Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com wrote the following around OTAs: “Last year's feel-good story when he came off a year-long practice squad stay to play 14 games as a special-teamer, the undrafted Jules is even better this year with a work-ethic professionalism that has caught the coaches' attention.”

Jules won’t yank starting time from the Cook-Battle combo and Dugger will be busy working all over the place where needed as the third guy. But he can carve out a nice niche for himself on special teams and earn the trust of coaches to get out there if needed in the base defense.

Not bad for an undrafted player. And not bad for a Bengals team that still hasn’t fully corrected from the Jessie Bates mistake.
