After 13 years away from the sport, UCLA gymnastics legend Katelyn Ohashi is looking to make history at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. At 29 years old, Ohashi made her return to gymnastics at the 2026 American Classic on June 27.

Before retiring Ohashi was one of the greatest gymnasts in history. She led UCLA to a national championship and won the individual floor title at the 2018 NCAA Championships. Ohashi also defeated seven-time Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles for the all-around title at the 2013 American Cup.

At the American Classic, Ohashi tied for third on beam and competed on floor. Now, she will compete at the U.S. Classic on July 18 with the goal of qualifying for the U.S. championships, which is where the Team USA roster is determined.

If Ohashi makes the team, she will be the oldest U.S. female gymnast to qualify for the Olympics. Simone Biles claimed that title at the 2024 Paris Olympics at age 27. Ohashi will turn 31 on April 12, 2028.

“I want to have fun with it,” Ohashi said in a video press conference Thursday, per the Los Angeles Times. “I want to see how far I can go with it, and how far I can push myself.”

“It’s really funny, also,” Ohashi said laughing, “because, like, I’m pretty much a senior citizen.”

Throughout history, most Olympic gymnasts have been teenagers. But at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Team USA was the oldest U.S. women’s gymnastics Olympic team since 1952.

Biles, Jordan Chiles, Jade Carey and Suni Lee were all in their 20s.

It is possible Team USA could be even older at the 2028 Olympics if all four gymnasts return and Ohashi joins the squad. Carey, who is 26 years old, also competed at the American Classic alongside Ohahsi and is eyeing her third Olympic berth.
