Rod White, who led Swain County to two North Carolina high school football state championships and spent 12 years coaching the Maroon Devils, died on Aug. 2. He was 69.
"Whether he was masterminding defenses on the sidelines, inspiring students in the classroom, or serving as one of the beloved voices of the Maroon Devil Network, Rod brought unmatched energy, humor, and heart to everything he did," Swain County High School Athletics wrote in a Facebook post.

He compiled a 94-59-1 record in 12 seasons as head coach, leading Swain County to NCHSAA 1A state championships in 2001 and 2004. His 94 victories rank second in program history behind Deitz.
White replaced legendary coach Boyce Deitz in 1997 after serving 18 seasons as one of Deitz's assistants. He served under Deitz and helped the program win five state championships during that time.
White was part of 279 victories and seven state championship teams during his coaching career at Swain County, that included his time as an assistant under Deitz,
Swain County inducted White into its Hall of Fame in 2015.
A celebration of life for White will be held at Swain County in the gymnasium on Aug. 8 from 2-4.
