The Carolina Hurricanes are the 2026 Stanley Cup Champions, defeating the Vegas Golden Knights in six games with a 3-0 victory on Sunday night. With the win, it marks the first time former Spartan Rod Brind'Amour's first Stanley Cup as an NHL head coach.
Brind'Amour, a star at MSU in the 1988-89 season, before going on to have a 22 year NHL career as a player. As a player, he won a Stanley Cup with the Carolina Hurricanes in 2006. 20 years later, he is holding the Stanley Cup as the head coach of the team he led to hockey's greatest accomplishment as the captain. He becomes the 7th person in NHL history to win a Stanley Cup championship for the same organization as both a player and head coach.
Taking over the Hurricanes as the head coach in 2018-19, his first NHL head coaching gig, he has made the Hurricanes into one of the NHL's best teams, but a trip to the Stanley Cup final eluded him until this year. In his first chance at the cup as a head coach, he took advantage, and is bringing the cup back to Carolina.
This Stanley Cup victory marks the end of a remarkable run from Carolina, going 16-3 in the playoffs en route to the championship.
Congratulations to the former Spartan on reaching hockey's mountaintop once again.
