Former PGA golfer Matt McQuillan has died at the age of 45.
The Canadian golfer died on Wednesday, Aug. 5 in a hospital in Kingston, Ontario, the PGA announced. His cause of death was not immediately known.
McQuillan earned his PGA Tour card in 2010 and competed in the 2011 season, playing in 32 events and making the cut nine times. His best finish was a tie for third at the John Deere Classic.
The golfer finished two more times in the top 10, tying for sixth at the Reno-Tahoe Open and seventh at the Frys.com Open. In 2011, he finished a career-best 145th in the FedExCup standings.
The golfer was introduced to the game at the age of 10 by his father, Mark, according to Golf Digest. He won several Canadian junior championships before he went on to play at Oklahoma State and Georgia.

He turned pro in 2003 and spent years on the developmental circuit, including the Canadian Tour, now part of PGA Tour Americas. After winning the 2005 TELUS Edmonton Open, he spent time away from golf and worked as a bartender — before returning to the sport he loved.

Family and friends are now remembering McQuillan as a “respected golfer” and a “devoted son.”
“Matty was a respected golfer, devoted son, hilarious brother, and friend,” according to his obituary. “Matt developed lifelong friendships while mentoring anyone who loved the game of golf.”
In recent years, McQuillan worked as a golf coach in Kingston, according to the PGA.
“He will be deeply missed by many and his spirit, love and compassion will be remembered every day,” his obituary states. “Rest easy, Matty. We love you.”
