As reported by the Carolina Panthers on Friday afternoon, former linebacker Dean Wells has died following a two-year battle with cancer.
Wells, who passed away on Thursday morning, was 54 years old.
The Louisville, Ky. native played his college ball at the University of Kentucky from 1988 to 1992. That final season saw Wells set the program's single-season sacks record (10) as well as their single-game sacks record (5.0), which remains intact to this day.
He would then be selected by the Seattle Seahawks in the fourth round of the 1993 NFL draft. Wells spent his first six NFL campaigns with the Seahawks—amassing 330 combined tackles, 2.0 sacks, an interception, three forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries over 84 games.
His final three pro seasons came for the Panthers, beginning in 1999. Wells totaled 199 tackles, half a sack, two interceptions and three forced fumbles in 45 outings.
Dean is survived by his wife, Lisa, and his two sons.
