If Notre Dame is to have the season that many pundits are projecting them to have, they could see an old familiar face on the opposite sideline in a College Football Playoff bracket.

The Oklahoma Sooners are expected to hire former Notre Dame assistant Deland McCullough as its new running backs coach, according to multiple reports, after he spent last season in the same role with the Las Vegas Raiders. CBS Sports first reported the expected hire.

McCullough helped shape one of the country's most productive backfields from 2022-2024 at Notre Dame. Under his watch, Audric Estimé delivered a 1,341-yard, 18-touchdown season in 2023. Also, Jeremiyah Love has emerged as a dynamic threat in the Irish offense and later finished near the top of Heisman Trophy voting. Love is now projected to be a first round pick in the upcoming NFL draft.

At Oklahoma, McCullough will replace former Sooners star DeMarco Murray, who left earlier this month to become running backs coach for the Kansas City Chiefs. The highly respected McCullough returns to the college game after one season in Las Vegas and places a coach with strong Notre Dame ties on the staff of a perennial playoff contender. In 2025, the Sooners had a record of 10-3 campaign and made a CFP appearance.

For Irish fans, McCullough’s latest stop underscores the continued demand for Notre Dame’s coaching talent and ensures another high-profile program is being shaped, in part, by a recent South Bend architect.
