The Dallas Mavericks will be adding two former New Orleans Pelicans employees to new head coach Dusty May's Mavericks coaching staff this offseason, as former veteran Garrett Temple joins ex-head coach Willie Green.
Marc Stein of The Stein Line reported on Saturday that Temple would be putting an end to his playing career and would immediately become an assistant coach. He already pretty much was that for the Pelicans and the Toronto Raptors over the final five years of his career.
Temple was in New Orleans for two years, averaging 4.3 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.0 assists. It was a return home for him, having grown up in Baton Rouge. His father, Collis, was the first African-American player for the LSU Tigers. Both are great basketball minds, so this was always going to be his career path.
Many might have expected his career to end there, but he kept going. In a league that continues to get younger, being able to survive without really playing is very impressive.
It's similar to what the Pelicans are doing right now with DeAndre Jordan. Not very common, but it clearly pays dividends. Now Temple will essentially be doing the same thing, but as an official coach. An amazing career for someone who was previously undrafted, beating odds all along the way.
It will be a reunion for Temple and Green, as he played for the coach during his New Orleans tenure.
Green's spot on May's staff is his first career move since being fired by the Pelicans. Similar to Temple, Green was never going to be unemployed for long. His career in New Orleans didn't have a great ending, but there were flashes in the beginning and signs that he could be a good head coach in the right situation. Now, he'll try to work his way back to the top and start with Dallas.
