A former Fairleigh Dickinson University basketball player was shot and killed in Harlem, New York, police said.
Kinu Rochford, 35, of Brooklyn, was fatally shot in the head Friday during the Kingdome Basketball Tournament in Harlem.
A 28-year-old man and 22-year-old woman were also shot. The New York City Police Department says they are in stable condition.
Rochford played for Fairleigh Dickinson University from 2011 to 2013.
He played professionally after graduation. Rochford played in France, Kosovo, Israel, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Switzerland.
Rochford received the FDU George Braun Leadership Award in 2013, which recognizes students who display exemplary leadership skills.
“Our hearts are heavier today hearing the tragic news,” said Director of Athletics Jason Young in a statement on the university’s website.
“Those who knew Kinu described him as a fierce competitor with a big heart who made many positive contributions to the FDU community. Today is another reminder to value each other and every day that we have,” said Young.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he is heartbroken for Rochford’s family.
“We are working closely with our community partners to provide services to those affected and the entire community. Our administration is using every lever across agencies to prevent further violence and ensure all New Yorkers can safely enjoy the city this summer,” Mamdani said in a post on X.
No arrests have been made and this is an ongoing investigation, police said.
