Former LSU baseball infielder Mikey Ryan carved out an everyday role with NC State in 2026 after leaving LSU in the transfer portal. Ryan left LSU searching for playing time, and he found it with the Wolfpack.
Ryan started 44 of the 45 games he appeared in during the 2026 season and finished in the top five at NC State in most hitting categories. His 1.031 OPS and .595 slugging percentage finished second, while his nine home runs tied for second. Ryan hit .342 with 54 hits and 34 RBI.
In ACC play, Ryan hit his stride. He batted .377 and led the team with a .623 slugging percentage against conference opponents, all while starting 21 of 22 games. Over the course of the regular season, he recorded 14 multi-hit games.
NC State played two games in the NCAA Tournament, losing to UCF and Auburn. Ryan went three for six with two RBI and three walks in the Auburn Regional.
In his lone season at LSU, Ryan played in 16 games primarily as a defensive substitute during non-conference games. Luling, LA native recorded a hit and scored two runs as part of the 2025 national championship team.
Ryan's success raises some questions about whether LSU should have made a bigger effort to retain the infielder. Ryan excelled vs quality pitching in a power conference while LSU struggled to build a consistent infield in 2026.
