CARMEL — Former Indiana University basketball player Todd Leary was arrested Thursday morning by Carmel police and charged with 10 felony counts, including five Level 6 felony frauds and five Level 6 felony thefts.
All charges involve loss or theft of property between $750 and $50,000. IndyStar has requested the probable cause affidavit from the Hamilton County Prosecutor. An initial hearing is scheduled for Friday afternoon.
In Indiana, a Level 6 felony is the least severe of felony crimes and can include offenses such as theft, fraud, auto theft and some DUI crimes. Possible penalties for a Level 6 felony include a jail sentence of up to 2⅟₂ years and fines up to $10,000.
Leary, a star at Lawrence North High School who played for IU and coach Bob Knight from 1989 to 1994 including a Final Four appearance in 1992, has faced trouble with the law before.
In 2010, he was arrested outside Assembly Hall an hour before he was set to announce an IU game as a color analyst. Leary faced 17 felony charges, including conspiracy to misappropriate title insurance escrow funds. Court documents revealed Leary once worked for a title insurance broker who pled guilty to several charges in a $2.7 million scheme.
Leary spent 365 days in prison and seemed to turn his life around. In 2017, IndyStar followed Leary as he fed the homeless on the streets of Indy and talked about the mistakes he'd made in the past and the changes he had made in his life.
The Hamilton County Prosecutor will have the final charging decisions in Leary's case, according to police.
