TAMPA, Fla. — Georgia football missed out on the two entertaining seasons of Diego Pavia as Vanderbilt quarterback because the Bulldogs didn’t play the Commodores in the expanded 16-team conference.
Vanderbilt went from doormat to a team knocking on the big boys’ door with the Heisman Trophy runner-up fueling the offense.
No pressure, Jared Curtis.
The former five-star quarterback is seen as the future Commodores starting quarterback.
Maybe even when Vanderbilt opens it season on Sept. 5 against Austin Peay.
There’s a little Oct. 3 matchup at Georgia.
That’s the team Curtis was committed to before the Nashville native flipped to his hometown program.
That was something that Vanderbilt running back Sedrick Alexander couldn’t help but notice.
“It definitely got my attention,” he said. “Just seeing that we can flip recruits. I mean, like you know, it’s kind of hard to flip recruits at Vanderbilt. Being able to flip recruits from a good school like Georgia…I think he’s going to live and ride out with that one.”
Curtis hasn’t been named the starter just yet. Senior Blaze Berlowitz is another candidate.
“We have to evaluate all possibilities and put the best person on the field that’s going to help us win,” Lea told the Knoxville News Sentinel.”
Alexander said the 6-foot-3, 230-pound Curtis “definitely has the potential to start.”
He said his “arm talent is crazy. The first time I’ve seen it, I was like dang. He’ll be in the film room. He does what you want your quarterback to do. Just very proud of him and how he has adjusted since he’s been in college.”
Curtis is already a celebrity.
Comedian Nate Bargatze, who lobbied on ESPN’s College GameDay for Curtis to go to Georgia, gave him a cameo in his movie “The Breadwinner.”
“Certainly, we’re excited about Jared. We believe he has the physical tools and mental tools to be a great player in the SEC,” Lea said. “We wouldn’t have recruited him if we didn’t feel that way. We will make that evaluation through training camp and do what’s best for our team when we play Austin Peay.”
Georgia beat Vanderbilt 37-20 on Oct. 14, 2023 in their last meeting.
“Vanderbilt football has become something different,” Lea said.
He was talking about his five five seasons as head coach.
“I’m incredibly grateful to everyone had the courage to believe in our vision and walk beside us along the way. I’m incredibly grateful to our players, those who chose to stay and fight together to build something meaningful while the world laughed from the safety of the sideline.”
Vanderbilt went 2-10 in 2023, losing after the Georgia game 33-7 to Ole Miss, 47-6 to South Carolina and 48-24 to Tennessee.
“That’s called getting your ass kicked,” Lea said.
Vanderbilt improved to 7-6 in 2024 and 10-3 in 2025. Commodore fans hope Curtis, when he does become QB1, can keep the newfound vibes in Nashville going.
“He’s supposed to live up to the hype,” wide receiver Junior Sherril said. “He has raw talent. He has NFL talent. He has a great arm. He’s a great guy, too. He’s a competitor. You can just tell, he wants to learn more.”
