The Atlanta Falcons are embracing their history under new president of football Matt Ryan, and many former players have noticed. Not only was Roddy White regularly spotted at the team's OTAs, but it sounds like former Falcons cornerback Asante Samuel likes what Atlanta has done this offseason as well.
Samuel praised Falcons quarterback Tua Tagovailoa as a good fit for the team and predicted Atlanta could win the NFC South this season.
"Tua Tagovailoa to the Falcons is a good fit," Samuel wrote on his social media account. "The Atlanta Falcons are a team to look out for this season. Don’t be surprised if the Falcons win the NFC South."
As pathetic as the NFC South has been, the Falcons haven't secured a division title since 2016. Last season, the team finished in a three-way tie with the Carolina Panthers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers but still missed the playoffs.
Tagovailoa impressed at this week's mandatory minicamp, and he appears to have a leg up on Michael Penix Jr. in the team's quarterback competition. Penix is still not 100 percent in his return from ACL surgery, but he expects to be ready for training camp.
Samuel recorded six of his 51 career interceptions during his two-year stint with the Falcons from 2012-2013. Atlanta won the division in 2012 before losing in the conference championship round to the San Francisco 49ers.
As for Samuel's old teammate, Roddy White, the former Falcons receiver said he was on Team Penix to win QB competition.
"I just think Michael Penix is super talented," said White. "I mean, when I go out to practice and I watch him throw the ball, he can make every throw around the field... I think, you know, with Kevin [Stefanski] coming in, the windows and the pictures are going to be much more open."
The Falcons are off until training camp begins next month, with their first open practice coming on July 31.
