The Miami Dolphins replaced head coach Mike McDaniel with Jeff Hafley this offseason, after McDaniel led the team to a 35-33 record and two playoff appearances over his four years.
Not long after McDaniel's firing, former Dolphins running back Raheem Mostert critiqued McDaniel's coaching style, despite the two spending eight years together between San Francisco and Miami.
Now, former Dolphins wide receiver Jarvis Landry is hitting back at Mostert and shifting blame off and McDaniel and onto the players in the locker room.
"Based on a comment that Raheem gave, I think it answers the question of what was the problem with the Miami Dolphins throughout this little era where people couldn't figure out how they had the talent, but it goes to show you that the problem is also a culture problem," Landry said on his own podcast. "To me, this tells me they didn't have enough leaders in the locker room. If we're dependent on a coach to lay the hammer down and be this tough presence around the team, it tells me that they didn't have enough leaders inside of the organization. And I think great teams and great players, they put that on themselves.
"They lean into, you know, being an extension of the coach. The coach is really there to create an environment for people to feel comfortable under pressure. I'm not saying the coach is not going to hold you accountable, but the coach shouldn't have to yell. Man, [we're] grown men. Honestly, bro, if you look at some of our great coaches that we all love and respect, I wonder if Raheem Mostert would say this if he was playing for Andy Reid. Andy Reid don't seem like he's a coach that's yelling. No, he holds you accountable, get the job done or next man up."
McDaniel is a brilliant offensive mind and will likely find success with the Justin Herbert as the offensive coordinator of the Los Angeles Chargers in 2026. He'll likely get another shot to run a team again at some point, and it will be interesting to see what, if anything, he does differently in his second chance.
