The musical chairs of high school basketball coaching hires continue to spin.
Monrovia moved quickly to replace Nick Hinojosa, who was officially named as Lebanon’s new boys basketball coach on Friday. Just a few hours later, Monrovia announced former Danville coach Brian Barber as Hinojosa’s replacement, pending board approval.
Barber coached the past 26 years at Danville, where his teams won 12 sectional championships and four regional titles. Combined with his first three seasons as coach at Riverton Parke, Barber has a 501-192 career record. His teams have posted a winning record in 28 of his 29 seasons.
Barber stepped down after the 2024-25 season and was replaced at Danville by his longtime assistant, Mark Artman. The move to Monrovia reunites Barber with new athletic director John Regashus, who was the Danville athletic director from 2011-20.
“We couldn’t be more excited to welcome coach Barber to Monrovia,” Regashus said. “It’s an incredible opportunity for our student-athletes to learn from one of the most accomplished coaches in the history of Indiana high school basketball. I know for certain that our team is going to be tough, they are going to compete, and they are going to be prepared. During our time working together in the past, there was never a single game in nine years where I felt we were less prepared than our opponent.”
Hinojosa was 29-64 in four seasons at Monrovia, including a 6-17 mark last season. Hinojosa replaces Albert Hendrix, who resigned as Lebanon coach after posting a 200-165 record in 15 seasons to coach at Frankfort. Lebanon was 16-8 last season.
