Former Colorado Buffalo Alejandro Mata held down the starting kicker position for Deion Sanders for the entirety of his four-year college career; now, he'll do the same in Orlando as a part of the Indoor Football League.

Mata was announced as a member of the IFL's Orlando Pirates on Friday, joining the premier arena-style football league. The Pirates are in the midst of their 2026 season, currently 4-3, which means Buffs fans might not have to wait long to see Mata back in action.

Under the IFL rules, the longest kick that Mata can attempt is a 45-yard field goal, perfect for the former Buff whose career-long was a 47-yarder. In Colorado, Mata made 82% or 31 of his 38 career field goal attempts and scored 204 points, the fourth-most of any Buffaloes kicker.

Mata is perhaps best known for his incredible accuracy when kicking extra points, going 110-for-112 in his Colorado career. The 98.2% mark is the second-best of any Colorado kicker with at least 100 attempts, trailing only Will Oliver, who made 98.5% of his extra points.

The Pirates' next game is scheduled for Sunday at 10 a.m. MT against the New Mexico Chupacabras at the American Dream Mall. All the IFL games are available on Yahoo Sports.
