The Kansas City Chiefs are experiencing a sense of deja vu following the blockbuster trade with the Los Angeles Rams and parting ways with cornerback Trent McDuffie. The high-profile trade netted the Chiefs multiple draft picks, while their former All-Pro defensive back set a new contract record.
According to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Rams and McDuffie agreed to a four-year extension worth $124 million, with $100 million guaranteed. The $31 million per year amount sets a new record for cornerbacks, making the former Washington Huskies standout the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history.
McDuffie, with the new deal guaranteed $100M, ranks him above the current top cornerback contracts, including Derek Stingley Jr. ($89.026M), Sauce Gardner ($85.653M), Patrick Surtain II ($77.5M), and Denzel Ward ($71.25M).
Kansas City had a similar scenario a few years ago after trading away star wide receiver Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins. Hill would go on to sign a lucrative contract for his position, while the Chiefs acquired draft picks. Patrick Mahomes was still able to navigate the offense without his All-Pro wide receiver, as the Chiefs secured two Super Bowl titles after the trade.
During his four seasons in Kansas City, McDuffie had 246 tackles, three interceptions, six sacks, and eight forced fumbles. He earned first-team All-Pro honors twice, in 2023 and 2024.
