Mike Evans leaving the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was hard to fathom.

Evans is the Bucs' record-holder in pretty much every receiving category, is arguably the best offensive player in team history, and should be a first ballot Hall of Famer once he decides to hang up his cleats.

He was also supposed to be a lifelong Buccaneer.

After 12 seasons in Tampa, Evans shockingly left the Bucs in free agency in March to join the San Francisco 49ers. It was a devastating loss for the franchise, both on the field and emotionally.

So, why did Evans leave? It wasn't money. According to his own agent, Tampa offered more money than Evans got from the 49ers. Listening to Evans speak about why he left, it appeared his intention was always to sign elsewhere.

“I did my research on a lot of teams that I was looking at. I was looking at contenders, guys with good quarterbacks obviously,” Evans said. “So I was looking at here, Buffalo Bills, teams that needed a number one wide receiver. This was my number one spot on my own. And then I talked to John and Kyle, and it solidified it for me. I’ve always been a fan of Kyle. He just talked about how he sees me in this offense, and it just made me even happier. It was a no-brainer, really, after I got on the phone with him.”

Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that Evans was seeking a new challenge as he entered the twilight of his career.

Former Bucs' head coach Bruce Arians, whom Evans won Super Bowl LV with, isn't buying it.

Arians Shares His Skepticism

In an appearance on the Pewter Report podcast, Arians shared his skepticism about the public explanations for Evans' departure, especially knowing Evans had always wanted to be a Buc for life.

“I was very surprised. I was almost shocked because I know how much it meant to him, and I know the offer we made,” said Arians, who has worked the past four years as an official advisor to general manager Jason Licht.

“There had to be some underlying thing that I don’t know was the reason. But it wasn’t money."

Arians' words are a stark contrast to the reasons the organization has given, that Evans left due to a "family decision" or wanted a "new challenge." He admits he doesn't know why Evans left, but strongly believes there was an underlying issue that hasn't been made public.

Final Thoughts

There has long been speculation that Evans left because he had grown weary of head coach Todd Bowles. While Arians doesn't mention that as a possibility, his comments will probably lead more people to believe that was the case.

Whatever the reasons that caused Evans to leave, it really doesn't matter anymore. He is gone, and Tampa's current group of receivers all must step up in his absence.

Even without Evans, the Bucs still have a strong crop of receivers, led by Chris Godwin Jr. and Emeka Egbuka. Tampa's passing game should be just fine in 2026.
