Former Denver Broncos linebacker Jerry Hopkins died on July 27 at age 85. The family held a funeral in Hillsboro, Texas, on Monday.
Hopkins was a star center and linebacker at Texas A&M. The co-captain earned All-SWC honors and featured in the Blue-Gray Game, the Southwest Challenge Bowl and the All-American Classic. After college, he was picked by the Houston Oilers in the 1963 AFL draft. After being cut by Houston, he landed with the Denver Broncos, where he played the first four seasons of his pro football career.
Official tackle stats were not tracked in Hopkins' era, but he is credited with six interceptions, four fumble recoveries and 9.5 sacks in 49 games (36 starts) in Denver. He led the team with eight sacks in 1964. Following his time with the Broncos, Hokins went on to play for the Miami Dolphins and Oakland Raiders before hanging up his cleats after the 1968 season.
Hopkins is survived by his wife, Joan Brooks Hopkins; his son, Jerry Hopkins, Jr. (Ali); his daughter, Allison Hopkins; his granddaughter, Parker Hopkins; and his sister, Judy Baker (Buddy).
