Former Alabama football quarterback AJ McCarron is back in Alabama, this time coaching football.
On Thursday, Dec. 18, the Birmingham Stallions, the UFL team based in the state, announced that they were hiring McCarron to be the team's coach. The announcement came days after Skip Holtz stepped down.
The Stallions started in the USFL in 2022, before the merger created the UFL. They won the two USFL championships and the first UFL title. In 2025, they won their division but fell in the conference title game.
“I am excited about this new opportunity with the UFL,” said McCarron. “This game has given me so much as a player, and now I am ready to give back as a coach. It's even more special that I get to do that while representing my home state – a state that has supported me throughout my career. Our team will build upon the amazing legacy of Skip Holtz. I have a tremendous amount of respect for Coach Holtz, what he has done for the league and for the Stallions. I am ready to put in the work that will continue producing championship wins for the city of Birmingham.”
McCarron, a Mobile native, won three national titles with the Crimson Tide. He won two as the starting quarterback in 2011 and 2012 under Nick Saban. He won the Maxwell Trophy, Johnny Unitas Trophy and earned All-American honors in 2013.
McCarron is no stranger to the UFL, playing with the St. Louis Battlehawks for the 2023 and 2024 seasons. He most recently was running for Alabama Lt. Governor but stopped that campaign earlier in December.
The UFL season will start in March but the schedule has not been announced yet.
