On the day the transfer portal opened in college football and players from around the country formally seeking a new home, TCU Football received some terrific news of a player that would be remaining in Fort Worth. All-Big 12 safety Jamel Johnson announced on Friday that he would be returning to the Horned Frogs for his senior season. Johnson led the Big 12 with five interceptions in 2025 and finished as TCU’s 2nd-leading tackler with 96 stops

A four-star prospect out of Arlington Seguin in the Class of 2023, Johnson had offers from everyone, selecting the Horned Frogs over Texas, Oregon, Alabama, Oklahoma among many others. Johnson contributed as a true freshman before becoming a full-time starter as a sophomore in 2024, finishing third on the team with 73 total tackles. Johnson tested the waters of the transfer portal following that season, eventually withdrawing and sticking with the Horned Frogs with an expanded role at TCU in 2025. Johnson took his game to another level this season, becoming a pillar of the Horned Frogs defense, adding the ball-hawking turnover-creation to his heat-seeking nose for the ball carrier. Johnson became a Thorpe Award semifinalist and 2nd Team All-Conference honoree. With fellow Safety Bud Clark out of eligibility, Johnson will be the leader of the secondary and a major piece of the defense in 2026.
