Jul. 18—The key pieces for the 2025 football season are in place.
New football sections were announced by the Minnesota State High School League back in April. And in the first week of July, the MSHSL released district alignments for the 2025 and '26 seasons.
In lieu of conference play, football has operated under a district regular-season schedule since 2015.
The 2025 football season gets underway with practices beginning on Aug. 11. Week 1 games are slated for Thursday, Aug. 28 and Friday, Aug. 29. The regular season concludes with Week 8 games on Wednesday, Oct. 15. The last day of section play is Friday, Oct. 31. The 2025 Prep Bowl is set for Nov. 21-22 at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.
Here's a look at the new districts for area football teams:
* Willmar is one of three teams staying in the Skyway Copper division, along with Rocori and Hutchinson. Defending Class AAAA champion Becker is out, moving to the Skyway Platinum with Detroit Lakes, St. Cloud Tech, Fergus Falls and Princeton. In comes Marshall from the South Central Red. Marshall lost to Becker in the state semifinals last season. Coming off a 2-8 season, the Cardinals open the season on Aug. 29 at Fergus Falls.
* New London-Spicer, Litchfield and Montevideo are all part of the Mid West Central Black division along with Dassel-Cokato, Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted and Morris/Chokio-Alberta. Minnewaska is in the Mid West Central Blue division, pairing with Melrose, Sauk Centre, Osakis, Holdingford and Royalton.
* Three divisions in the Mid-South District sport area teams. The Teal division has Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City, Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg and Panyesville along with Eden Valley-Watkins, Kimball, Redwood Valley and St. Cloud Cathedral. The White division is an All-Camden Conference unit with Dawson-Boyd, Lac qui Parle Valley, MACCRAY and Yellow Medicine East along with Canby, Lakeview and Minneota. BOLD is in the Purple division with Murray County Central, Russell-Tyler-Ruthton, Sleepy Eye, Springfield and Tracy-Milroy-Balaton.
* The Mid Northwest Gold division sports a pair of area teams in Benson and Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa. Also in the Gold are West Central Area, Upsala/Swanville Area, Browerville, Long Prairie-Grey Eagle, Maple Lake and Ashby/Brandon-Evansville.
* Fresh off a state trip in 2024, Renville County West is one of 15 teams in the 9-Player South West division. The Jaguars are joined by Adrian/Ellsworth, Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart, Cedar Mountain, Edgerton, Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman, Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda, Hills-Beaver Creek, Mountain Lake, New Ulm Cathedral, Nicollet, Red Rock Central, Wabasso, Westbrook-Walnut Grove and Bethlehem Academy of Faribault.
