The Florida State Seminoles baseball team came into Tuesday’s game rolling after a weekend sweep of the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. And unfortunately for Bethune-Cookman, the FSU buzzsaw did not slow down. The Seminoles offense hung seven runs through the first two innings and the staff combined for a no-hitter in the 12-1 blowout of the Wildcats.

Cooper Whited started for the Seminoles and pitched well early. He sat down Bethune 1-2-3 to start the first and the FSU bats pounced in their bottom of the frame. After Brayden Dowd opened the bottom of the first with a single, Eli Putman was hit by a pitch. The legend of Myles Bailey continued as he scorched a double to right field to make it 1-0. Kelvyn Paulino Jr followed with a walk to load the bases and Noah Sheffield plated Putnam with a fielder’s choice to second. John Stuetzer picked up the second hit by pitch of the inning before a Nathan Cmeyla line out to end the inning. The line out led to a double play to end the inning, but not before Florida State picked up their third run.

Whited cruised in the second with two strikeouts and his second 1-2-3 inning of the game. The Seminole bats stayed hot in their half of the frame with Will Bavaro starting things off with a single. Cal Fisher flied out before Dowd and Putnam connected on consecutive singles to make the game 4-0. Bailey popped out and Paulino walked again before the Seminoles extended the lead to 7-0. With the bases loaded, Sheffield hit a routine grounder to short that was booted into the outfield. The ball ended up in no man’s land and it allowed all three runners to score.

Both teams were held scoreless in the third and Whited ran into trouble to start the fourth. After pitching so well through the first three, the junior lost his control. Whited hit the first batter and then walked the next. He settled down for his sixth strikeout before loading the bases with another HBP. FSU turned to Brodie Purcell to try and save the shutout but he hit the first batter he faced to push the first Wildcat run across the plate. Purcell picked up the next two outs to end the top of the fourth. Whited’s line: 3.1 IP, 0 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K, 2 HBP.

After a quiet fifth for both teams, the Seminoles offense picked back up in in a big way in the sixth. Cmeyla started with a single followed by a Bavaro walk. Fisher moved the runners with a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch scored Cmeyla. Next, Dowd brought in run number nine after the first baseman bobbled his grounder. Putnam was again hit before Bailey absolutely crushed a pitch over the right field fence to extend the lead to 12-1. Cole Stokes had the last two innings for the bullpen and allowed no hits.

In total, the staff pitched 7 innings and allowed one run on zero hits. The Seminole arms did allow three walks and three hit by pitches to go along with nine strikeouts.

FSU will host NC State for a weekend series starting this Friday.
