It has not been a stellar season for the Florida Gators, but there have been a few bright spots halfway through the 2025 campaign.
Among them is legacy wide receiver and returner Vernell Brown III, who has dazzled the Gator Nation so far as a true freshman, making highlight-reel catches as well as exhilarating run-backs on special teams. It should come as no surprise, then, that he was among those lauded by The Athletic's college football staff on their midseason All-Freshman team.
Brown got the call at the all-purpose position in the specialists category — a fitting place for a versatile playmaker.
"The five-star recruit from Orlando ranks second to (Miami Hurricanes WR Malachai) Toney among true freshman receivers with 27 catches for 368 yards," the authors note. "Brown has also handled 16 returns on special teams — second-most among freshmen — and has averaged 15.4 yards per return on punts, second-best among freshmen."
He amassed all of those numbers in six games so far this fall, starting in five at wide receiver and serving as the Gators' primary punt and kick returner. VB3 ranks second in the nation among true freshmen in all-purpose yards with 643 and his catch total marks a team-best.
