Florida basketball (14-5, 5-1) reached a new season-high on the NCAA NET rankings after defeating the LSU Tigers on Tuesday, 79-61.

The Gators have bounced between Nos. 15 and 16 since Jan. 10, returning to the top 15 after Saturday's win over Vanderbilt. Now on a five-game win streak, Florida is up to No. 14 in the country. The main reason for the move isn't Florida's win, however. Vanderbilt suffered a 25-point loss, its third straight defeat, against Arkansas and dropped to No. 16 from No. 13.

The Gators close out January with two more Quadrant 2 games — the first against the Auburn Tigers at home on Jan. 24 and then a road matchup with the South Carolina Gamecocks on Jan. 28. While those games don't give Florida a great chance to move up on its own, other results around the country can lead to movement just as it did on Tuesday.

Florida gets back to Quadrant 1 games with four consecutive matchups in the first half of February.

Breaking down Florida’s wins by Quadrant

Before going into Florida’s resume, it’s important to understand how the quadrants are divided. Where a game is played has as much to do with the quadrant as the quality of the opponent. As the rankings change, so does the quality of the wins.

  • Quadrant 1: Home 1-30, Neutral 1-50, Away 1-75
  • Quadrant 2: Home 31-75, Neutral 51-100, Away 76-135
  • Quadrant 3: Home 76-160, Neutral 101-200, Away 135-240
  • Quadrant 4: Home 161-353, Neutral 201-353, Away 241-353

Quadrant 1 Games

Florida is 5-5 in Quadrant 1 games, with losses to No. 2 Duke, No. 3 Arizona, No. 9 UConn and No. 46 TCU in non-conference play. Those first three are considered very good losses, but it does give Florida a narrow path to a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The TCU loss was originally a Quadrant 2 loss, but the Horned Frogs have leaped into Q1 territory. A win Tuesday night firmed up their position with a three-spot jump.

The Gators' lone non-conference Q1 win came against No. 35 Miami at a neutral site (Jacksonville). The Hurricanes are firmly in Quadrant 1.

Florida's first five SEC games came against a Q1 opponent. After falling to No. 70 Missouri, Florida rattled off four wins over No. 16 Vanderbilt, No. 24 Georgia, No. 25 Tennessee, and No. 75 Oklahoma, boosting its resume. Missouri has bounced back and forth between Q1 and Q2 recently, which makes Florida's lone SEC loss look worse on paper.

Quadrant 2 Games

In Quadrant 2 games, Florida is 3-0, with the LSU win adding one to the win column. The Tigers are ranked No. 50 and would need to climb 20 spots to reach Quadrant 1 status. The good news is that LSU would need to drop 25 spots to fall to Quadrant 3.

Florida's other Q2 wins came against No. 77 George Washington and No. 91 Providence, both at a neutral site during the non-conference schedule. Providence is nearing the threshold between Q2 and Q3.

Quadrant 3 and 4 games

The only Quadrant 3 game Florida has played in so far was a home game against No. 116 Florida State. The Seminoles have trended down most of the season but recently jumped 20 spots in the NET. The Seminoles still need to climb 41 spots to reach Q2.

Florida went 5-0 against Q4 teams, beating No. 191 Colgate, No. 218 Dartmouth, No. 217 Merrimack, No. 345 North Florida and No. 353 Saint Francis by an average of 33.6 points. None of these teams are likely to break into Quadrant 3 territory.
