Colorado football and Deion Sanders are back in action this weekend as they host their spring football game during the university's Black and Gold Day. The intrasquad scrimmage will take place on Saturday at 1 p.m. MT.
The Buffs are looking to rebound in 2026 after a disappointing three-win season. With the spring showcase quickly approaching, we've identified five players to watch ahead of Colorado's spring showcase on Saturday afternoon.
Perry arrives in Boulder coming off a standout 2025 season with the Miami Redhawks, where he tallied 43 catches for 976 yards and six touchdowns. While Perry may not possess prototypical size for a wideout, his elite explosiveness and shiftiness make him exactly what this Go-Go Offense needs as a legitimate deep threat. All eyes will be on Perry on Saturday as we see how offensive coordinator Brennan Marion deploys his newest weapon.
When Thomas transferred from Notre Dame to Colorado this winter, most viewed the redshirt freshman as a depth piece in the secondary. Instead, Thomas has turned heads throughout spring practices, racking up interceptions and earning daily respect from coaches and teammates alike. Cornerbacks coach Aaron Fletcher explained the chip on his shoulder.
"He's got a point to prove. In his mind, he was refused, he was overlooked," Fletcher said when discussing Thomas.
The three-star Notre Dame transfer has been impossible to miss all spring, leading the defense in interceptions and even getting into a scuffle with WR Hykeem Williams about a month ago. Thomas is determined to silence the doubters, and Saturday's matchups against Colorado's talented receiver corps will provide another opportunity to do exactly that.
Boo Carter might be the most talented transfer the Buffaloes landed this offseason. The four-star defensive back arrived from Tennessee, where he made a significant impact before being dismissed for missing practices. The talent has never been in question with Carter; it's about staying disciplined. So far, he's done precisely that, drawing glowing reviews from coaches and teammates.
Safeties coach Vonn Bell called Carter one of the most talented players he's been around in a long time. Colorado nickel coach Kevin Mathis offered even higher praise.
"In this defense, that guy (nickel) has to be an athlete and really knowledgeable," Mathis said. "He's probably going to be one of the most talented guys I've coached aside from Travis Hunter."
Saturday should give us a glimpse into how defensive coordinator Chris Marve will deploy Carter.
Everyone expected Julian Lewis to run away with the starting quarterback job in Boulder, but Utah transfer Isaac Wilson has surprisingly impressed, legitimately competing with Lewis throughout spring practices.
How many first-team reps Wilson receives on Saturday and whether he capitalizes on them will be fascinating to monitor. In mid-March, cornerback Preston Ashley offered this endorsement.
"He's that one…You that one," Ashley said, referring to Wilson.
While Wilson landing the starting job remains unlikely, he could push Lewis to elevate his game. Last season taught us that nothing is guaranteed under Deion Sanders, who maintained notoriously short leashes with his quarterbacks throughout the year.
Colorado poached both Sacramento State running backs from the transfer portal as the duo followed their former head coach, Brennan Marion, to Boulder. Henderson II and Smith possess a distinct advantage over their backfield competition: they already understand Marion's Go Go offense inside out.
The pair combined for 167 carries, 1,076 yards and 10 touchdowns (five each) last season at Sacramento State. Henderson II enters as a junior while Smith will be a sophomore this fall, and they'll aim to form a formidable tandem that finally delivers consistent rushing success in the Big 12, something the Buffaloes haven't seen in quite some time.
