First-year success for Cardinals head coaches rare

Mike LaFleur is in his first season as the Arizona Cardinals' head coach. First-year head coaches do not have a history of success for the team.

This year's Cardinals team is not expected to be good. They have the lowest projected win total in the league. Finding four wins on the schedule is difficult.

A winning season is nearly impossible. Since the Cardinals moved to Arizona, only one head coach has done that — Bruce Arians in 2013 with 10 wins.

Here is the first-year win total for all Cardinals head coaches, in reverse order, since they moved to St. Louis.

• Bruce Arians (2013): 10 wins

• Denny Green (2004): 6 wins

• Vince Tobin (1996): 7 wins
• Buddy Ryan (1994): 8 wins
• Joe Bugel (1990): 5 wins
• Gene Stallings (1986): 4 wins
• Jim Hanifan (1980): 5 wins
• Bud Wilkinson (1978): 6 wins
• Don Coryell (1973): 4 wins
• Bob Hollway (1971): 4 wins
• Charley Winner (1966): 8 wins
• Wally Lemm (1962): 4 wins

Of all the first-time head coaches, only Arians and Winner (8-5-1 record) had winning records.
