The defending Olympic men's ice hockey champions are moving on to the semifinals in the 2026 Winter Olympic Games.
Finland, the 2022 Winter Olympic gold medalists in Beijing, survived with a 3-2 overtime victory over Switzerland in the quarterfinals on Wednesday afternoon.
Forward Artturi Lehkonen scored his third goal of the tournament on a breakaway to send his country back to the semifinals for a second consecutive Olympic games and the fourth time in the last fifth Olympic appearances dating back to the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver.
It seemed as if Finland was going to be upset as the reigning champs trailed 2-0 for a large majority of the afternoon after the Swiss scored two goals in the opening period.
Forward Sebastian Aho finally got Finland on the board not long past the half way point of the third period to cut Switzerland's lead in half.
With the net empty and time feverishly running out, defenseman Miro Heiskanen tied the game at 2-2 with the extra attacker on with just over a minute remaining in regulation.
With reseeding taking place after the quarterfinals, No. 4 seed Finland will have only a short bit to wait to see who they play in the semifinals, as it will either be top-seeded Canada, No. 2 seed United States (if they beat Sweden) or No. 3 seed Slovakia.
