No one loved Wirfs who carried similar narratives which is why he was picked in the teens. OL in general is a boring position to draft, and RTs even more.

Joe Thomas was drafted 18 years ago. If he is your example of a top OL prospect, you probably won't draft one high because he is rare.
People loved Wirfs but there were questions where he was going to play. And to your point... he still went in the teens. It's anecdotal, and nothing more than a vibe check, but I still felt like people were more bullish on Wirfs than they've been on Mauigoa.

Even more telling... Wirfs was the 4th OT off the board, not the 1st. I feel like the Wirfs conversation is better had in relation to say, Monroe Freeling or Spencer Fano than it is Mauigoa going at 3.

Like, obviously Wirfs is an elite player, but three teams "whiffed" on their evaluation for the same positional need. It takes at least a bit of 20/20 hindsight to use Wirfs as your argument over say, Jedrick Wills or Mekhi Becton in the same draft... both guys playing the same position that didn't make it to second contracts with their team, which has been the "good" argument for Mauigoa, that we're expecting him to lock down RT for 10 years.

I consider them all to be at least as successful as PJJ so far.

OL (especially highly draft OL) are just different. A lot of developed players are extended because teams understand the difference between top 12 and top 6 at the position is fairly negligible.

Yes “good player” with the sixth overall pick who doesn’t put up stats (because there aren’t any) won’t get you fired. But you have to get your best players from somewhere.
I think this is the appropriate argument against drafting Mauigoa at 3.

Yeah…none of those guys had the college career that Mauigoa had.

Watch us trade down for freeling the hottest riser right now….been predicted to go 6 to 10 I seen tonight
I don't trust this team with projects so I would not be a fan. When we prove we can develop these unrefined prospects, I might be more open to it.

Sorry I loved Wirfs. Here’s what I wrote 4/15/20, “I think the Cards will draft with the assumption that Humphries is the LT. So they will ask who’s the best RT and importantly who’s content to play RT. In my mind that’s Wirfs. On the others Thomas has the highest floor. Becton looks better at LT than RT.”

Several people on the board loved Wirfs but he wasn’t being touted as a top 5 player. The convo is about the online draft community and their opinions.
