SOUTH KINGSTOWN - Macy Antoch didn’t give it a second thought with the game on the line.

She was open. The clock was running down. The only option was to shoot.

It wound up a winning decision for Westerly in the opening girls basketball state tournament semifinal at the Ryan Center. Antoch buried a 3-pointer from the right wing to give the Bulldogs a dramatic 52-49 victory over Portsmouth on Saturday afternoon.

“I knew the time was running down,” Antoch said. “Someone had to step up and shoot it, so I just did it.”

Annie Hurd’s drive down the right side for a layup drew the Patriots into a 49-49 tie, and Westerly called a timeout with 22.7 seconds left and the shot clock off. Portsmouth switched from a 2-3 zone to guarding Westerly straight up, and the Bulldogs snapped into a different offensive set. Santanaa Hamelin kicked a pass from two steps inside the key to the perimeter and Antoch rattled home a jumper inside the final four seconds.

“We had to make an adjustment with the game on the line,” Antoch said. “We just did what we always practiced.”

The Patriots (18-5) refused to go away against the top seed, taking a 46-45 lead with 2:32 left on a Haley Hurd putback and tying it twice from there. Violet Silvia connected on the second of her two free throws to make it 47-47 and Hurd’s bucket had Portsmouth on the brink of forcing overtime.

“We weren’t really used to that,” Antoch said. “It’s good now that we have that experience. Our team just kept pushing.”

Silvia finished with a game-high 12 points and Hurd added 11 for the Patriots. Hamelin and Ella Reyes shared team-high honors for Westerly (25-1) with 11 points and Sophie Gwaltney added 10. The Bulldogs will play for a first state championship at the top level in a 4:30 p.m. tip Sunday.

“No one’s made it here,” Antoch said. “It’s amazing that our team gets to do this for our school.”
