If you were watching Friday night's game between the Colorado Rockies and Minnesota Twins at Target Field, then you saw a good old-fashioned clash of a baseball game.
The Twins jumped out to a seven-run lead, only to have the Rockies score eight runs in the eighth and ninth inning to take a lead. Minnesota pushed across a tying run in the bottom of the ninth, then won it in the 10th for a 9-8 win.
Sure, it's disappointing to see the Rockies close the gap, take the lead, then surrender it in the 10th inning. It is Colorado's 50th loss this season after Friday night. Yet again, Colorado displayed a lot of strength in battling back from so far down.
Rockies starting pitcher Tomoyuki Sugano and Twins starter Taj Bradley put up some numbers on Friday night. Sugano worked five innings, giving up eight hits, seven earned runs, walked one, struck out two, and gave up two home runs. Bradley worked seven innings, surrendering three hits and two earned runs.
Antonio Senzatela suffered his fourth blown save this season, and Jimmy Herget took the loss in relief. For Minnesota, reliever Andrew Morris got the win by working a clean 10th inning against Colorado hitters.
Instead of rehashing how the Twins scored their seven runs, let's focus on the three-run eighth and five-run ninth from those scrappy Rockies.
Ezequiel Tovar led off the eighth with a double, then Edouard Julien walked. Jake McCarthy then hit an infield single, loading up the bases.
Mickey Moniak followed with an RBI groundout to get the Rockies on the board. Hunter Goodman then hit a sacrifice fly to right field, giving Colorado two runs in the eighth. TJ Rumfield's RBI single wrapped up Colorado's scoring in the eighth, making the score 7-3.
And now, we go to the top of the ninth. Cole Carrigg walked and scored on Julien's one-out RBI double, putting the Rockies within three runs at 7-4. Jake McCarthy took a pitch and sent it over the Target Field wall as Julien scored ahead of him.
At that point, it was 7-6 Minnesota, but Colorado wasn't done yet.
Kyle Karros doubled, then Hunter Goodman hit a two-run home run. It was so good that Goodman immediately did a sweet bat flip just after he walked away from home plate. It was Goodman's 22nd homer this season and, well, by golly, Colorado was up by one run at 9-8.
The Twins, though, had some fight left in them. Byron Buxton got a really lucky bounce on his grounder to Rockies third baseman Willi Castro.
At first, Castro moved back a bit as the ball was bounding toward him. When the ball hit the ground surface near third base, it took a big hop over Castro's head. Minnesota posted the game-tying run at 8-8, leading the game into the 10th inning.
Colorado didn't score in the top of the 10th, giving Minnesota just enough leeway to pick up a win. Designated Twins runner Josh Bell was replaced by pinch-runner Kyler Fedko. Herget intentionally walked Victor Caratini. A Herget wild pitch allowed Fedko to move to third base.
Royce Lewis played hero and spoiler at the same time, singling through a drawn-in Rockies infield and Fedko scored the game-winning run.
Want to know a statistic that'll make Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer rip his hair out? Colorado was 4-for-15 with runners in scoring position and left eight total runners on base. The Rockies had plenty of chances to post up even more runs, but didn't get the job done.
The Rockies and Twins play again on Saturday at 5:10 p.m. MT and on Sunday at 12:10 p.m. MT.
