Scuderia Ferrari has committed to bringing an engine upgrade to the Austrian Grand Prix via Formula 1’s Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities program.
With the power units under review by the FIA, the FIA deemed Ferrari’s power unit at least 4% down on Red Bull’s Ford powertrain, which has been labeled the top of the class thus far.
While Red Bull disagrees and believes it is Mercedes that has the engine edge, Ferrari is wasting no time in bringing their upgrades along, as per the program.
Due to their failure to meet a threshold, they receive two engine upgrades this year and additional development time on their power unit.

Ferrari has been banking on this development time to break through, with all of their focus on the car’s aerodynamics and extracting cornering speed.
However, Ferrari’s power unit technical director Enrico Gualtieri tempered expectations about how radical a shift the engine upgrade will be in the team’s pecking order.
“This update is not a major step, and it will not, on its own, change the competitive order,” he said.
“In a championship as competitive as this one, it is unrealistic to expect a single update to transform the overall picture, especially under the current homologation and development constraints.
“Performance is built progressively, not only through hardware changes, but also through how effectively you optimise the package race by race.”

While this specific package won’t be a total game-changer, Ferrari will be hoping to make the most out of their remaining development opportunities afforded to the team.
“Major concept changes or architectural shifts during a Formula 1 season are uncommon, particularly when they affect installation and integration with the car and its operating conditions,” he said.
“The entire team at the factory is now working relentlessly to make the most of the additional opportunities provided by the ADUO mechanism, in full alignment with our intended development roadmap.
“The update we are bringing to Spielberg is a relatively minor one, and it’s the result of the work completed in recent weeks to transfer improvements from our development program to the track.”
Regardless of how things turn out for Ferrari with the new power unit, the Italian manufacturer is in a good spot in the field for a second-place finish.

Will Ferrari bring a bigger update in the future?
