All eyes are on Fernando Mendoza before the start of the upcoming NFL season, including Tom Brady‘s. In a new interview, the University of Indiana alum and national champion said he communicates with the Super Bowl champion frequently and even shared the advice the 48-year-old gave him before the start of the season.

Speaking with PEOPLE at the Time 100 Sports Gala on Thursday, July 16, Mendoza, who was drafted by the Las Vegas Raiders during the 2026 Draft, said he communicates with Brady frequently. Although speaking with the NFL legend is like “uncharted territory” for him, he said he’d be silly not to ask the elite athlete for advice whenever he can.
“Tom’s given me a lot of advice — and I like to sometimes keep it close to the vest,” Mendoza said about their relationship. “However, the one thing that he always says is that, hey, you’re in your early 20s and making sure you do everything possible to be successful and, and to best serve your teammates and not let your teammates down.”
While Brady is officially out of the league, he is a minority owner of the Raiders, so it makes sense that Brady would spend time investing in the 22-year-old.
Fernando Mendoza Previously Spoke About His Relationship With Tom Brady Before The NFL Draft
This isn’t the first time Mendoza has spoken about his relationship with Brady, a legend of the New England Patriots and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft, Mendoza appeared on “The Dan Patrick Show” and recounted the first time he communicated with Brady.
“It was fantastic. He gave me the message that he’s going to push me, and he’s not going to be all lovey-dovey,” Mendoza said. “And if the Raiders draft me, he’s going to be a mentor and wants to pour into whatever quarterback the Raiders have, whether it’s me, whether they draft somebody else.”
Mendoza shared at the time that he thought being drafted by the Raiders would be a “great opportunity” for him to learn not only from his teammates but also from Brady, given that he’s had success over his years-long career.

Earlier this year, Mendoza made headlines after the Raiders shared a clip of him speaking with Brady on FaceTime.
“Oh shoot! What’s up, Mr. Brady? How you doing?” Mendoza asked the NFL star, adding, “Tom, how you doing?”
Brady, always even-keeled and laid back, replied with a smile and said, “You can call me Tom. Mr. Brady’s my dad.”
Mendoza then said he was “blessed” to be speaking with him and the rest of the NFL teams at the Combine. “I’m great. Ready for the opportunity,” he said.
Brady added that he just wanted to pop into the meeting to say hello before wishing the former Indiana star much success and good luck in his career. “Just keep being yourself man, you’re doing a great job,” Brady finished.
Mendoza Went Viral In December 2025 After Exclaiming The Hoosiers Were ‘Flippin’ Champs’
Before he was drafted by the Raiders, Mendoza was the name on everyone’s tongue, as he led his University of Indiana team to a Big 10 Championship win over Ohio State in December 2025. At the end of the game, Mendoza spoke with a Fox Sports reporter about the electrifying moment, and gave “all the glory to God” that he and his teammates were “flippin’ champs.”
“… we were never supposed to be in this position but by the glory of God, the great coaches, great teammates, everyone we have around us, we were able to pull this off. Whoever thought the Hoosiers would be here?” he said.

He caught up with PEOPLE days later and said that his reaction was “raw emotion,” adding that while he may have done “a little too much,” he couldn’t contain his excitement for himself, his team, and his school.
“I was really, really happy for my team, and at the same time I didn’t wanna say anything cliche, you know, like ‘everything is possible.’ So I just wanted to keep it down and keep it authentic and just give the world my real self,” he said.
