FC Porto crowned Portuguese champions


Porto have been crowned Primeira Liga champions after beating Alverca 1-0 on Saturday, sealing the title with two matches still to play.


The decisive moment came five minutes before half-time when Jan Bednarek rose highest from a corner and powered home the only goal of the game, sparking celebrations among the travelling support.


Porto’s victory, combined with Benfica’s 2-2 draw away at Famalicao earlier in the day, means they now hold an unassailable nine-point lead at the top of the table.


It is Porto’s first league crown since 2022 and the 31st title in the club’s history, taking them closer to Benfica’s all-time record of 38 championships.


Benfica had looked set to delay the celebrations after racing into a two-goal lead, but the sending off of Nicolas Otamendi early in the second half changed the game. Famalicao fought back to earn a point and leave the door wide open for Porto.


rancesco Farioli has enjoyed an excellent first season since arriving last summer, guiding Porto back to the top of Portuguese football at the first attempt.
