Father Ryan has hired former Vanderbilt shortstop Brian Harris as its new baseball coach, the school announced in a release June 16.

Harris, who played for the Commodores from 2006-10, replaces Mike Mascari, who retired in April after 18 TSSAA baseball seasons.

Harris graduated from Montgomery Bell Academy and led the Big Red to the Division II state championship in 2004 before becoming an All-SEC product at Vanderbilt. He set the NCAA record at Vandy for being hit by 37 pitches in 2010.

“I am honored to have the opportunity to lead the baseball program at Father Ryan,” Harris said in a release. “The mission-driven and values-oriented approach for which Father Ryan is known is aligned with my personal values and coaching philosophy. I am grateful for the opportunity to join this community of amazing students, families, faculty, staff and alumni.”

Harris has been an assistant coach at University of Illinois Chicago and Tulane. Most recently, he directed his own competitive youth travel baseball program in Nashville.

“Coach Harris has the experience and passion needed to carry on the legacy Coach Mascari built over the last two decades,” Father Ryan athletic director Ann Mullins said in a release. We are grateful for the foundation Coach Mascari built and are excited about the future with Coach Harris.”

At Father Ryan, he takes over a program that claimed the Father Ryan state championship in 2002.

“We are pleased to welcome Coach Brian Harris to continue the proud history of baseball at Father Ryan,” Father Ryan president Paul Davis said in a release. “Our athletics program is integral to the Father Ryan experience, and I am confident that Coach Harris will lead through the lens of our mission to be an experience of the living Gospel while challenging students to reach their spiritual, academic, and personal potential.”
