No football, no conflict. For the first time in four years, the PGA Tour's Farmers Insurance Open will have a tradition Sunday finish.
From 2023 to 2025, the Torrey tour stop used a Wednesday-to-Saturday format so as to avoid the NFL's AFC and NFC Championship games. But, some schedule tweaks for 2026 puts the Farmers on the week off between the conference championship games and the Super Bowl.
For the last three PGA Tour seasons, the Farmers Insurance Open had a Wednesday-to-Saturday format, so as to avoid having the final round on CBS go up against the TV ratings juggernaut that is the NFL.
"The Farmers Insurance Open is a timeless sports and lifestyle tradition unlike any other in San Diego, and our fans can always count on spending quality time with family or mingling with friends at Torrey Pines while enjoying some amazing golf set against spectacular Pacific Ocean views," Marty Gorsich, CEO of the Century Club of San Diego, said in a statement last March. "The good vibes from our 2025 event are still fresh in our memories, as the tournament came down to the 72nd hole in crowning our new champion."
The 2026 Farmers will be Jan. 29 to Feb. 1 and will be the first PGA Tour event on CBS in 2026. And by not overlapping the NFL, Jim Nantz can call the Farmers in person and not remotely from the site of the AFC title game, which he had done for the last three seasons.
However, the PGA Tour couldn't completely avoid the NFL, as the Broncos-Patriots AFC game and the Seahawks-Rams NFC game did overlap the American Express this past Sunday. Those games were at 3 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. ET respectively, while the AmEx live golf window on Golf Channel was 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. ET.
