Fans can attend the world darts championships at Alexandra Palace later this month - but will be banned from wearing fancy dress costumes or football-style singing and chanting. Announcing its ‘Covid-secure’ plans for the event, the Professional Darts Corporation said that up to 1,000 tickets would be available for each session but, in keeping with a toned down atmosphere, fans can wear festive jumpers but not fancy dress. It will be the first UK-based PDC event since March to include live crowds, with households from Tier 1 or Tier 2 areas of the country allowed to buy a table of four seats. Each table must consist of one household or support bubble and tickets for a venue that can normally hold 3,000 fans will go on sale from Thursday. The announcement follows weeks of planning and talks between the PDC and local authorities. Those fans who buy tickets must sign up to a series of guidelines. These include strict social distancing, wearing face coverings at all times when moving around the venue, table-service only for food and drinks and set entry and exit zones. The only acceptable reasons for leaving a table will be to use the toilet or visit the smoking area of Alexandra Palace. The draw for the 2021 world darts championship will take place on Thursday, with 96 players competing over 16 days and 28 sessions. Michael van Gerwen, the world number one, will be favourite for a fourth world title but Gerwyn Price and defending champion Peter Wright are also expected to challenge strongly for the £500,000 winners’ prize. “Football-style singing and chanting will not be permitted, however you will be able to encourage your favourite players from your table,” said a PDC spokesperson. “Spectators must only interact with individuals from their own table throughout the duration of their time inside the venue.”
