CJ Montes isn't coming to The Highest of Seven Hills after all.
On Thursday, May 8 Zach McKinnell, Senior Editor and Owner of Sports Illustrated's FCS Football Central, reported that the transfer quarterback isn't transferring to Florida A&M football. Montes initially announced his commitment to the Rattlers on Sunday, April 27.
Instead, Montes will rejoin Football Bowl Subdivision team Kent State, who he practiced with this spring after transferring from Fordham, a Football Championship Subdivision program. Montes also played for New Mexico during his freshman season in 2021-2022.
In 2023, Montes starred for the Fordham Rams, completing 64 percent of his passes for 2,997 yards, 26 touchdowns against just one interception. For his performance, Montes garnered All-Patriot League Second Team honors and was a Walter Payton Award Finalist.
Montes played just three games, all starts for Fordham in 2024 before suffering a lower body injury.
After Montes' de-commitment, the Rattlers quarterback room has Traven Green, Tyler Jefferson, Bryson Martin, and Roman Purcell, and signee from Marianna High School, RJ Mayes. Longtime FAMU backup quarterback Junior Muratovic entered the NCAA Transfer Portal on Thursday, May 1.
Under second-year head coach James Colzie III, FAMU football will open its 2025 season against the Howard Bison on Aug. 30's Orange Blossom Classic in Miami Gardens' Hard Rock Stadium.
