Another weekend, another series sweep for Florida A&M baseball.
On Sunday, the Rattlers completed their second consecutive sweep, and third overall, in an 11-6 victory over Southwestern Athletic Conference foe Jackson State.
The Rattlers (18-14, 11-1 in SWAC) beat the Tigers (17-13, 5-7 in SWAC) 7-3 on Friday, then won in a seven-inning mercy rule 11-1 on Saturday.
FAMU baseball has won six straight SWAC games. The Rattlers also have the SWAC’s best record through four weeks of league play.
“I’m very impressed with our ball club,” FAMU head coach Jamey Shouppe told the Tallahassee Democrat after Sunday’s game.
“To be 11-1 through 12 games in conference play ― wow, that’s something. I tip my hat to my players. And we did it three different ways. We had pitching, defense, and also hitting.”
The Rattlers shined offensively and defensively during the weekend series versus Jackson State.
In FAMU’s run-rule victory on Saturday, Garrett Workman pitched a complete game for the Rattlers as he faced 24 batters, struck out seven, and only allowed three hits and one run.
FAMU’s defense has significantly impacted its strong start, placing third in fielding and pitching amongst the SWAC’s 12 teams.
“Having a lot of trust in my defense is key,” said Workman, a true freshman out of Tallahassee’s North Florida Christian. “I can’t go out there and strike out or get everyone out. So, I’m just thankful that our defense has been good.”
Will Brown starred at bat for the Rattlers.
The Tallahassee native and Rickards High School alumnus dinged three homeruns for FAMU over the weekend. Brown added seven hits, eight RBI, and five runs in 13 at-bats.
Brown, a redshirt junior, said he’s beginning to regain confidence after missing all of last season due to a labrum injury.
“Three homeruns ― can’t complain about that,” Brown said. “Lately, I’ve been struggling, and this weekend, I told myself to lock in a bit more than usual, grind out some at-bats, and change a few little things. And it worked for me.”
The Rattlers will play at Moore-Kittles Field again on Tuesday when the Mercer Bears come to town for a non-conference matchup. The midweek matchup begins at 4 p.m.
FAMU will then shifts its focus back to SWAC play when it heads to Itta Bena next weekend for a three-game series versus the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils.
The Rattlers hope their good fortunes travel.
“Whenever we go on the road, if we just keep that same mentality, I think we’ll be fine and play good,” Brown said.
Four of FAMU’s six remaining SWAC series are on the road.
After Tuesday’s non-conference game versus Mercer, the Rattlers won’t play at home until April 23 against Mercer again ahead of FAMU’s matchup against the defending SWAC champions Grambling State that weekend.
“Now, we have the challenge of going on the road,” Shouppe said. “That’s good for a team to get on the road because it brings you closer together. I’m looking forward to seeing these guys bond a little bit the next two weekends and continue to play good baseball.”
