Things have gotten painfully slow now that the Atlanta Falcons have sent their players home for the summer, but (unfortunately) the NFL news cycle never sleeps. Since there won't be much going on in Atlanta until training camp begins on July 29, we thought it would be a good time to look ahead to 2027.
After a year of bargain-bin shopping in free agency and having to navigate the draft without a first-round pick, the Falcons will be locked and loaded next offseason. The team has a ton of cap space, and barring some kind of unforeseen trade, we assume Atlanta will have its first-round selection in 2027.
In today's Falcons Wire news recap, rookie Zachariah Branch explains why he transferred from USC to Georgia, tight ends coach Kevin Koger defends Kyle Pitts from criticism, we look at a new mock draft and examine the team's top free agents in 2027.
Falcons rookie Zachariah Branch joined the popular St. Brown Podcast a few weeks ago and talked about a number of topics. Branch even explained why he transferred from USC to Georgia before his final season in 2025.
"I guess they had a lawsuit back then somebody was lifting in the weight room and the weight fell on their chest or their neck," said Branch. "The jugs machine was only in the weight room, so you know at USC, they got the gate that comes down. So the gate was closed, and I'm like, 'Hey, can I get in there - just let me in to get some jugs or whatever?' but it was the lawsuit so they couldn't really make any adjustments." -- READ STORY
In a new 2027 NFL mock draft from Pro Football Sports Network, Atlanta used the sixth overall pick on Oklahoma defensive tackle David Stone, adding both talent and instant depth to one of the thinnest defensive positions on the roster.
"The Falcons seem to be heading in the right direction, but they still have a few kinks to work out on both sides of the ball," wrote PFSN draft analyst Alec Elijah. "Atlanta would be wise to add more core pieces at defensive tackle, as it is their biggest need. Insert, Oklahoma’s David Stone, a true powerhouse in the trenches." -- READ STORY
Here's what Falcons tight ends coach Kevin Koger had to say about the he-doesn't-care-enough narrative surrounding Kyle Pitts, per Josh Kendall at The Athletic.
"Kyle cares a lot. People don’t realize how much the game means to him,” Koger said. “He does have a high standard for himself, separate of what people say outside the building. You want guys who have a high care factor, and he’s right at the top of that list. Sometimes I have to talk him down, but those are the guys you want to coach.”
Floyd is the most accomplished of this group by far, and even though he didn't have a memorable 2025 campaign, the veteran edge is likely still on defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich's radar in case James Pearce Jr. gets suspended. Floyd had 3.5 sacks last season, which was the first time in five years he finished with less than 8.5 sacks.
The Falcons have several key starters, including three offensive linemen, who are headed for free agency in 2027 if they don't secure extensions before the offseason. The team did extend two big pieces on offense, signing both Drake London and Kyle Pitts to multi-year extensions. Here's a look at some of the key names below.
