The Atlanta Falcons are holding a quarterback competition between Michael Penix Jr. and Tua Tagovailoa, but it really hasn't even started yet due to Penix's injury. However, since both quarterbacks have been throwing at OTAs, many have already formed their opinions.
Falcons legend Roddy White weighed in on Atlanta's QB competition during a radio interview with 680 "The Fan" on Tuesday. After praising the team for signing wide receiver Drake London to a four-year extension, White was asked to give his pick for the Falcons QB1 job.
"I just think Michael Penix is super talented. I mean, when I go out to practice and I watch him throw the ball, he can make every throw around the field," White answered. "I think, you know, with Kevin [Stefanski] coming in, the windows and the pictures are going to be much more open."
White went on to point out how Stefanski's offense is tailored to Penix's skill set.
"It's much more kind of like what we did -- 1-2-3 reads, you know, get the ball out of your hand, check it down, move on type of an offense. So I think it'll be positive for them. You know, a lot of down-the-field throws, 20-yard in cuts, deep digs and stuff like that, which he excels at. Throwing the ball outside the numbers, I think that's something that we have to get to."
White has been spotted alongside Falcons president of football Matt Ryan often throughout OTAs, and he would have as good of an idea as anyone. Not only has White watched the quarterbacks up close, but he knows a thing or two about what it takes to succeed at this level.
Over his 11 NFL seasons, White recorded 808 catches for 10,863 receiving yards and 63 touchdowns in 171 games (all with the Falcons).
"We need Mike to be that guy," White added.
