The Atlanta Falcons will have a few position battles worth paying attention to once training camp gets underway next week.
One of them is inside the running back room.
Although Bijan Robinson is obviously the clear cut starter on the roster and Brian Robinson Jr. is likely his immediate backup, the number 3 spot on the roster is up for grabs.
It appears to be a battle among 3 players for that third and likely final spot following cuts before the regular season begins. Who can give the Falcons the most value at the position between Nathan Carter, Tyler Goodson and Cash Jones?
Carter is the only player of the three who was with the Falcons last season, but with the new coaching change and movement in the front office, that may not matter at all. Regardless, last year he had 60 yards on 9 carries. Signed as an UDFA in 2025, Carter is still looking for an opportunity to make a bigger impact on an NFL roster, and he might have his best chance to break one this year.
Goodson signed a one year deal with the Falcons after spending his last 3 seasons fighting for time on the active roster with the Indianapolis Colts. Although most of his career in Indy was spent on the practice squad, he does have some reps with 54 carries, 264 yards, and a touchdown in his NFL tenure.
Jones is an interesting player and may not actually be in this competition at all. After being signed as an undrafted free agent, the plan may be to move him to wide receiver. If that's the case, his versatility at multiple offensive positions may actually come to benefit him if the race is tight. The former Georgia Bulldog would likely be a fan favorite if he somehow made the initial roster.
Last season, on Stefanski’s Cleveland Browns squad, the 3rd running back, Raheim Sanders, had 27 carries on the season, so the person who wins this battle will likely not win just because of his execution on offense. He will have to be a versatile piece that likely plays on all facets of special teams as well.
The Falcons training camp will officially begin when rookies report on July 24th. Veterans will report on the 28th, and the first official practice is scheduled for the following day on the 29th. The first open practice to the public is on July 31st at the IBM Performance Field.
