Depending on how things go, the Atlanta Falcons are either going to be a punchline or a dark-horse surprise in the NFC that nobody will want to face come December and January.
There's little consensus about this team going into training camp, with some analysts predicting a breakout season and others seeing them finish under 6.5 wins.
That lack of certainty is the big storyline. According to Brad Gagnon at Bleacher Report, the one word to best describe the vibe for the Falcons going into training camp this year is "guarded," as in guarded optimism, but the number of question marks is bringing the vibes down.
"New coach, new potential starting quarterback and plenty of talent on both sides of the ball. But there are still so many question marks surrounding this team that the vibe falls short of unbridled optimism."
Regardless of how you feel about Stefanski, the QB situation is a legit question mark. The former Browns head coach shuffled through quarterbacks like it was going out of style in Cleveland.
Falcons QB Tua Tagovailoa has previously shown a high ceiling when playing in a functional and creative offense, but he did not play his best football last season.
And while there has been less high-upside play from Penix at this level, he was a near-Heisman finisher at the college level and has only gotten 12 starts as a pro. Penix could be hiding immense potential and only needs a serious run of consecutive starts in order to unlock it.
So, it's fair to say that question marks are the story, but many of them can be answered with a passable year at just one critical position.
